As three mother’s to babies and pre-schoolers its only natural that we want what’s best for our little ones from skincare, to diet and education. Today we have the privilege of speaking with Lauren Taylor who is the genius lady behind Kokoso Baby which is a multipurpose natural coconut oil. We’ve even been lucky enough to try it out ourselves and can’t recommend it enough – keep an eye out for a review soon! Read on to find out more about Kokoso Baby.
Hi Lauren thank you for speaking with us today, could you tell us a little bit about yourself and your family?
Well I’m a 30 something mum-of-two who now lives in Warwickshire (we recently moved back to the motherland after living in south London for 12 years). My children are one and three, and between them and running Kokoso there’s never a dull moment!
Could you tell us a little bit more about Kokoso Baby? How did it first come about?
I started using coconut oil when my first baby was a few months old and developed dry skin and cradle cap. I hated the idea of using chemical-laden baby products and wanted to find something natural and organic instead. As someone who was totally new to coconut oil I was blown away by how it made my baby’s skin feel and it cleared up her cradle cap too. I started using it as a nappy cream, baby massage oil and body moisturiser for both of us, all with amazing results.
Then it struck me that ALL parents needed to start using this amazing natural skincare oil for their babies! I started formulating a business plan, spent a long time researching coconut oil for skincare and tried countless different brands and samples from around the world to find one with the right properties, texture and fragrance. It’s amazing how varied different coconut oils can be depending on how they’re made and the quality of the coconuts.
When I found my supplier in Thailand, everything just clicked into place. They’re an ethical family-run farm producing the creamiest raw virgin organic coconut oil that’s luxuriously lightweight and just perfect for moisturising baby skin. Compared to many of the others I tried that just didn’t make the grade, Kokoso Baby is non-greasy and has such a beautiful fresh smell.
What was the inspiration behind the name ‘Kokoso Baby’?
Kokoso means coconut in the international language Esperanto. I played with a few different names before settling on Kokoso and I’m so glad I did – it feels like it’s been around forever (and hopefully it will be!).
List three words that sum up what Kokoso Baby stands for?
Pure. Natural. Organic.
What has been your biggest achievement since launching Kokoso Baby?
Not long after launching the business I applied to the Boots ‘Inspired by Baby’ New Finds Forum, a programme for mums and dads with ideas for baby products to make life easier for other parents. To cut a long story short, ten months later Kokoso Baby is sitting proudly on the shelves of 200 Boots stores across the country. I’m still pinching myself to have come so far in only a year and just hope people love our coconut oil as much as I do, so that babies everywhere can benefit from the natural coco goodness!
Do you have any plans to expand to other products in the future?
I’m working on expanding the range as we speak!
How important is social media and bloggers for you and Kokoso Baby?
As a startup it’s so important. We don’t have the marketing budget that, say, Johnson’s does (yet we’re on the shelves next to them!). The response from mums on social media and from bloggers has been so amazingly positive and encouraging. When you get reviews like ‘Kokoso Baby is a must-have product for all new mums’, you know the massive risk you took in setting up the business was worth it.
Do you have any future plans for Kokoso Baby? Where do you see yourselves in 5 years time?
We’ve been told that to be on the shelves of Boots within a year of launching is unprecedented – and I hope we can keep on breaking new ground.
Finally, what one piece of parenting advice would you share with our readers?
Ditch the chemicals and go natural! Baby skin is 20-30% thinner than an adult’s and the moisturisers you use are absorbed. That’s a scary thought – who knows what long-term damage might be caused by the chemicals and perfumes in traditional baby skincare products?
Thank you for taking your time to speak with us Lauren and for sharing a little bit more about the wonderful natural coconut oil that is Kokoso Baby. All the best for the future!
